  • Description

SOUTH KOREA'S PRESIDENT CHUNG-HEE PARK WAS RE-ELECTED TO A SECOND FOUR-YEAR TERM IN VOTING YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). WITH MOST OF THE VOTES COUNTED, THE PRESIDENT HAS MORE THAN A MILLION-VOTE LEAD OVER HIS POLITICAL RIVAL, FORMER PRESIDENT POSUN YUN.

PRESIDENT PARK, A 49-YEAR-OLD FORMER GENERAL, SEIZED POWER DURING A MILITARY COUP IN 1961. AS LEADER OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLICAN PARTY HE IS WIDELY CREDITED WITH RESTORING SOUTH KOREA'S POLITICAL STABILITY AND STRENGTHENING THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMY.

BUT MR YUN, 69 -- WHO LOST THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN 1963 BY A NARROW MARGIN -- HAS REFUSED TO ADMIT DEFEAT, AND CLAIMS THE ELECTION WAS RIGGED.

OFFICIALS SAID 84 PER CENT OF THE 14 MILLION PEOPLE ELIGIBLE TO VOTE TURNED UP AT THE POLLING BOOTHS. SOME 8,000 POLLING STATIONS WERE SET UP AROUND THE COUNTRY.

A UNITED NATIONS OFFICIAL SAID THE ELECTION WAS ONE OF THE MOST PEACEFUL AND ORDERLY HE HAD SEEN.

PRESIDENT PARK MADE HIS MOST IMPRESSIVE GAINS IN RURAL AREAS, BUT ALSO MANAGED TO WHITTLE AWAY THE OPPOSITION'S SLENDER MAJORITY IN SEOUL. HE CAMPAIGNED ON THE STRENGTH OF THE COUNTRY'S ECONOMIC GROWTH DURING THE LAST FOUR YEARS, AND DEFENDED HIS SUPPORT OF THE UNITED STATES IN SOUTH VIETNAM. SOUTH KOREA HAS SENT 45,000 TROOPS TO THE WAR.

FOUR OTHER CANDIDATES, REPRESENTING SPLINTER GROUPS, WERE NOT REGARDED AS SERIOUS CONTENDERS.

IT WAS SOUTH KOREA'S SIXTH PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION SINCE THE COUNTRY BECAME A REPUBLIC IN 1948.
