  • Description

In the past ten-fifteen years new homes have been going up in Moscow at a terrific rate. Each year up to 120,000 new flats are being built.

Such a rate of construction has become possible thanks to the use of industrial methods.

Muscovites have long become used to the sight of almost-ready flats being carried on trucks through the streets.

Almost half the houses built from pre-fabricated panels come from the factory No.1, which is actually four factories, each specialising on a different unit; outside walls, bathroom, ceilings and so on.

As in most Soviet cities, building homes in Moscow has become almost an industry i itself. All processes at the factory are many automated.

Every four-and-a-half minutes the conveyor the factory No.1 produces one panel. That means a five-storey block of flats with 60 apartments which can be assembled in 18 days in put out every day. A nine-storey house with 143 flats is assembled in two months.

It is not surprising that at such a rate almost every other Muscovite has moved into a new home.
