  • Description

On Jan 28 Visnews cameras visited Fort Liedot, situated on Ile d'Aix in the Bay of Biscay off La Rochelle, which is being prepared to accommodate Ahmed Ben Bella and four other leaders of the Algerian Nationalist Organization F.L.N. The Algerians have been France's political prisoners since 1956.

Fort Liedot was formerly used as a holiday resort. Gendarmes are now bringing supplies to the island by amphibious vehicles and landing craft.

Under the amnesty announced by General de Gaulle on Jan 13 the Algerian Nationalist leaders will shortly be moved from "La Sante" prison near Paris to Fort Liedot for preferential treatment. The amnesty included Frenchmen serving prison sentences for collaborating with the Germans during World War II, common criminals and some 7,000 Muslim suspects in Algerian internment camps. The death sentences of 200 convicted Algerian terrorists were commuted to hard labour for life.

Messali Hadj, the 68-year-old leader of the Algerian nationalist organization M.N.A. was released on Jan 14 from Belle Ile Fortress where he had been prisoner of the French Government for three years.
