Background: Thousands of terrified tribesmen are hiding in the jungles of India's North Eastern Tripura State, after escaping a massacre, in which more than seven thousand may have died.

SYNOPSIS: Government troops were drafted into Tripura State after news of the massacre. Reports from the scene are still confused, but it's understood that as many as seven thousand people died during clashes between tribesmen and immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh.

As the remaining immigrants fled for their lives, their homes were burned down. Curfews have now been imposed in some areas as para-military police join the troop patrols.

As the fighting raged, some of the immigrants escaped with their families and entered the dense jungle, with little more than their vital belongings and little food.

Some five hundred tribal people have been found starving, and officials believe many more are threatened with the same fate as they roam the forests. The Bangladesh Newspaper Dainik Bangala reported that at least one hundred and fifty beheaded bodies of men, women and children had floated down the River Gumti since 10 June
For those that survived there's little or no food, although the Government's been asked to drop a thousand tonnes of rice into the jungle. Anti-immigrant militants have been blamed for the killings.
