  • Description

President Muammar Gaddafi of the Libyan Jamahiriya has been in Hungary on an official visit to discuss improving and increasing economic and social links between the two countries.

SYNOPSIS: When the Libyan leader's plane touched down at Budapest Airport, he and his party were met by an official government group led by President Pal Losonczi and Communist Party leader Jan???s Kadar. Colonel Gaddafi was dressed in his military finery, and added colour to the Budapest visit, which formed part of his current tour of Soviet Bloc capitals.

The Libyan and Hungarian leaders appeared in jovial mood as they walked from the airport. The visit by the North African head of state was seen more as a briefing exercise than a visit which would lead to dramatic changes in the level of co-operation between the two countries. Colonel Gaddafi first accompanied his hosts to the Monument of Hungarian Heroes, where he laid a wreath.

After the wreath-laying ceremony, the Libyan and Hungarian leaders went to the Parliament Building in Budapest, where they had their first round of official discussions. As well as the two heads of state, the talks were attended by Communist Party leader Jan???s Kadar and ministers from both countries representing foreign trade, agriculture and industry. The Libyan party was due to leave Hungary on Monday (26 June) for Colonel Gaddafi's first visit to East Germany.
