In Stockholm, the New Zealand Minister of the Environment, Mr. Duncan MacIntyre, urged the United Nations Environment Conference to bring pressure on France to halt its nuclear testing programme in the South Pacific.
Speaking to the plenary body or Friday (9 June), Mr. MacIntyre raised the issue as Peru sought approval of the Conference Committee on Pollutants that all atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons be brought to an end.
It was the second time in a week that the policies of a great power have been strongly criticised at the conference.
Mr. MacIntyre said all New Zealanders deeply resent that the South Pacific "sound continue to be exploited as a testing ground for a European power."
