Turkey's Labour Minister, Mr. Ali Riza Uzuner, met with a group of Turkish workers on?

  • Description

Turkey's Labour Minister, Mr. Ali Riza Uzuner, met with a group of Turkish workers on Tuesday (22 August) to hear complaints about their living conditions in Rotterdam, while he was in Holland for a conference of European social welfare ministers.

As a result of what he heard from the delegation, Mr. Uzuner said he would approach the Dutch government over the matter of improved housing for the 30,000-strong Turkish work force now in the Netherlands, and living mainly in Rotterdam.

There have been violent street riots in Rotterdam recently when the local Dutch population clashed with Turkish immigrants. The trouble began when the Turkish owner of an apartment building ordered a 25-year-old Dutch woman tenant to leave.

Incensed Dutch inhabitants went on a rampage of the old and overcrowded area of the town where Turks live, and ransacked Turkish-owned boarding houses.

In their plea to Mr. Uzuner, the Turkish labourers asked 'for the chance to live in housing fit for human beings'. Mr. Uzuner said he would visit their area to sea the accommodation situation for himself, and promised to speak to the Dutch government about the prevention of and further attacks on Turkish-owned houses.
