Once again an international Horse Fair was held at Verona with several European Countries participating. The event was opened by representatives of the Italian Government.
Several hundred horses, chosen from the best breeding stables, were entered in this competition. The Fair is the most important of its kind in Europe.
The breeds represented range from the "Heavyweight" class weighing 800 to 1000 Kgs. each and measuring 1.80 mts in height to the "Mignon Shetland Pony" which weighs about 62 Kgs. and measures around 59 centimeters in height.
Buying and selling proceeds at great speed due to the vastness of the event. All the important breeders are present and are interested in what goes on. The actual buying and selling is supervised by "brokers" who do all in their power to see the interested parties agree so as to receive their percentage.
The peculiar thing about this Fair is the fact that purchase and sale of animals takes place without pen or paper being used even once. Once the parties are agreed on the animals, their price and so on all they do is to shake hands. Effimerous as this procedure may seem to outsiders for those who deal at this event it is more binding than a dozen written contracts with seals, notary publics and so on. Once an agreement of this king is made and hands have been shaken no one is allowed to or even tries changing his mind.
