    THE TWELFTH GENERAL MEETING OF THE COCOA PRODUCERS' ALLIANCE OPENED IN ACCRA THIS WEEK. THE SEVEN-DAY MEETING IS BEING ATTENDED BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM ALL THE MEMBER-GOVERNMENTS OF THE ALLIANCE; GHANA, CAMEROUN, IVORY COAST, BRAZIL, NIGERIA AND TOGO.

    THE CONFERENCE WAS OPENED BY THE GHANAIAN COMMISSIONER FOR TRADE AND INDUSTRIES, MR RICHARD QUARSHIE. HE URGED COCOA PRODUCING COUNTRIES TO WORK HARD TO OBTAIN AN INTERNATIONAL COCOA AGREEMENT WHICH WILL GUARANTEE STABILITY IN THE PRICES OF COCOA -- AND HENCE STABILITY TO THE COCOA INDUSTRY.

    THE LEADER OF THE IVORY COAST DELEGATION, MR ANET BLE, SAID IN HIS SPEECH THAT HE WOULD WELCOME ANY MOVE TO BRING ABOUT SUCH AN INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENT.

    SPEAKING FOR BRAZIL -- THE ONLY NON-AFRICAN MEMBER OF THE ALLIANCE -- MR FRANCISCO THOMPSON SAID THAT HIS COUNTRY ATTACHES GREAT IMPORTANCE TO THE ALLIANCE AND WILL DO EVERYTHING IT CAN TO SEE TO ITS SUCCESS.

    THE CONFERENCE WAS ALSO ATTENDED BY A NUMBER OF OBSERVERS FROM COCOA PRODUCING COUNTRIES WHO ARE NOT MEMBERS OF THE ALLIANCE, LIKE COLUMBIA, ECUADOR AND VENEZUELA.
