  • Description

A guerrilla blew himself up in the Old City of Jerusalem on Saturday (19 June), apparently while he was preparing a bomb inside a public lavatory.

SYNOPSIS: The explosion occurred in David Street in the early afternoon. The guerrilla a young Arab in his early twenties, was seriously injured. Police and ambulance men carried him out of the lavatory where it is believed he was preparing the explosive charge.

The day was a public holiday and as usual the old section of the city was packed with tourists and visitors. The man received serious injuries to his face and stomach, and one leg was almost severed from his body.

Another man, who had been standing outside the lavatory and who was believed to be accomplice, was found suffering from shock. He was later detained by the police. After being given first aid in the street, and fitted with a glucose drip-feed, the man who had been inside the lavatory, was taken off to hospital by ambulance.

The lavatory had suffered very little damage as the man's body apparently shielded the walls from the explosion.
