    In Cario on saturday (5 June), the funeral took place of the Arab League's first Secretary General, Abdul Rahman Azzam. The following day, (6 June) during the 27th session of the Arab Economic Unity Council, ministers from 13 Arab states also paid their respects to Mr. Azzam. They also announced the formation of three new major Arab trading groups.

    SYNOPSIS: The funeral of Mr. Azzam was attended by several senior officials including the present Secretary General of the Arab League Mahmoud Riad. Also present were the former Egyptian Vice-Presidents, Mahmoud Fawzy and Hussein al-Shafie and the Speaker of the Egyptian National Assembly, Sayed Marie. Messages of sympathy and praise for Mr. Azzam's long and respected term as league Secretary General were received from many states.

    Meanwhile, ministers attending the Arab Economic Unity Council in Cairo stood for a minute's silence in memory of Mr. Azzam. His period of office covered a troubled time for the Arab world - including the emergence of Israel as an Independent state.

    Kuwait Finance Minister, Dr. Abdul Rahman al-Atiqi and council Secretary General, Dr. Abdul al-Saqban paid tribute to Mr. Azzam. Dr. Saqban also called on the Arab World to support Arab organisations and give them every opportunity for economic success. During the meeting the council announced the formation of three companies: one for agricultural food production, the second for industrial investments and the third for Arab tourism.
