  • Description

Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's Middle East peace initiative has received several setbacks since his visit to Israel. Syria and the Palestinian Liberation Organisation have both rejected invitations to attend his proposed Cairo summit - and by Tuesday (29 November) Israeli had been the only party to accept. Meanwhile Arab leaders opposed to President Sadat's peace initiative have planned a summit meeting of their own to be held in Libya later this week. And in the United Nations General Assembly the PLO representative made it plain how his organisation views President Sadat's peace initiative.

SYNOPSIS: Speaking during a debate at the Assembly on Monday (28 November) PLO representative Mr. Farouk Qaddoumi said President Sadat's visit to Israel had taken place at a time when extremists had taken power in Israel. In a reference to israeli Prime Minister, Menachem Begin, he said the Israeli extremists were led by a terrorist who called occupied Arab lands "liberated territories".

Mr. Qaddoumi was speaking on the first day of the General Assembly debate on the Palestinian question. Earlier in a debate on the Middle East situation the assembly had adopted a hotly debated resolution calling for the withdrawal of israel from captured territories, and the "attainment by the Palestinian people of their inalienable national rights". Mr. Qaddoumi went on to condemn President Sadat's visit to Israel and said it had created a major schism among Arab states.

The next speaker, Jordan's Dr. Hazem Nuseibeh, reiterated his country's stand on the Palestinian rights to be recognised in any peace settlement.
