THE COURSE OF ART IN THE SOVIET UNION HAS BEEN A DIFFICULT ONE. RUSSIA HAS?

  • Description

THE COURSE OF ART IN THE SOVIET UNION HAS BEEN A DIFFICULT ONE. RUSSIA HAS ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREATEST COLLECTIONS OF IMPRESSIONIST PAINTINGS, YET ITS LEADERS CONDEMN ALMOST ALL POST-IMPRESSIONIST ART, ALMOST EVERYTHING ACCOMPLISHED AFTER 1920.

UNTIL RECENTLY, CONDITIONS HAVE BEEN UNDERGOING A SLIGHT THAW, BUT NOW PREMIER KHRUSHCHEV HAS AGAIN PUT THE SOVIET GOVERNMENT SQUARELY IN OPPOSITION TO ARTISTIC MODERNISM. OUR FILM SHOWS A RECENT EXHIBIT STAGED IN HALL NEAR THE KREMLIN IN MOSCOW. AFTER KHRUSHCHEV'S DENUNCIATION OF THE PAINTINGS AS A DECADENT MODERNISTIC WORKS, MUSCOVITES FLOCKED TO THE EXHIBITION - A REFLECTION OF THE REKINDLED INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY AMONG THE RUSSIANS.

MILITIAMEN HELD BACK THE CROWDS AND ADMITTED ONLY A FEW PEOPLE AT A TIME. THOSE ALREADY INSIDE WERE RELUCTANT TO MAKE WAY FOR THE STANDEES OUTSIDE. IN THE SOVIET PRESS, THE ART CRITICS,WHOSE AESTHETICS ARE SHAPED BY THEIR POLITICS, ECHOED KHRUSHCHEV'S DECLARATIONS ON MODERNISM AND PRAISED SOVIET REALISM. THEIR PARTY-LINE VIEWS HAD LITTLE IMPACT ON THE CITIZENS OF MOSCOW. THE ROOM WHERE KHRUSHCHEV GLOWERED BENIGNLY ON TRADITIONAL COMMUNIST ART WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY EMPTY. THE PAINTINGS IN THE GALLERY WHICH MET MR KHRUSHCHEV KHRUSHCHEV'S APPROVAL LOOKED NO DIFFERENT FROM THOSE 35 YEARS AGO - A WOMAN, A BABY AND A TRACTOR. SOVIET SOCIALIST REALISM MAKES PROPAGANDA, NOT BEAUTY, THE ULTIMATE VIRUTE. ONE PAINTER CELEBRATED THE CUBAN REVOLUTION, IN THE SAME POSTER-PAINT SIMPLICITY THAT OTHERS USED TO DEPICT STALIN. THE OTHER SIDE OF THE EXHIBITION WAS LIKE ANOTHER WORLD. THERE, THE CROWDS WERE HUGE, THE CONVERSATION ANIMATED, THE PICTURES MORE MODERN. COMPARED WITH WESTERN ART, THE PICTURES WERE NOT REALLY ABSTRACT, AND MOST OF THEM WERE FAIRLY SHALLOW DESCENDANTS OF WORKS BY CEZANNE AND RENOIR AND OTHER MASTERS.

THE PRINCIPAL SUBJECT OF MR KHRUSHCHEV'S SCORN WAS A NUDE, ONE OF HE ATTENTION GETTERS IN THE PACKED GALLERY. ( A CU ON FINAL PAINTING). THIS BLEAK PAINTING IS A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE ART USED AGAINST THE STATE. IN ONE OF THE WINDOWS, BARELY VISIBLE, WAS A MAN HANGING BY HIS NECK. A WESTERN CRITIC SUGGESTED THE PAINTINGS MEANING... THAT EVEN THE SOVIET UNION, WHERE REPRESSION IS SOMETIMES A WAY OF LIFE, THE ARTIST CANNOT BE COMPLETELY STIFLED.
