  • Description

NATO SECRETARY-GENERAL MANLIO BROSIO ARRIVED IN ATHENS LAST NIGHT AFTER TALKS IN ANKARA AND SAID HE WAS MORE OPTIMISTIC FOR A PEACEFUL SETTLEMENT OF THE CYPRUS CRISIS. HE TOLD NEWSMEN AT THE AIRPORT THAT THERE WAS MORE WORK TO BE DONE AND IT WOULD TAKE SOME TIME BEFORE AGREEMENT WAS REACHED.

SIGNOR BROSIO HAS BEEN ONE OF THREE INTERNATIONAL PEACEMAKERS ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN TALKS WITH BOTH THE GREEK AND TURKISH GOVERNMENTS IN ATTEMPTS TO PREVENT AN OUTBREAK OF WAR.

HE SAID LAST NIGHT THAT ALL PARTIES INVOLVED WANTED A QUICK END TO THE CRISIS.

AFTER TALKS WITH GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER PANAYOTIS PIPINELIS LAST NIGHT SIGNOR BROSIO SAID - "I AM CONFIDENT WE ARE GOING TO KEEP THE PEACE".

DIPLOMATIC OBSERVERS IN BOTH CAPITALS BELIEVE THAT THE LIKELIHOOD OF WAR IS NOW CONSIDERABLY REDUCED FROM THE STATE OF HIGH TENSION EARLIER THIS WEEK. BUT ANY AGREEMENT REACHED WOULD AIM AT SETTLING ONLY THE PRIME CAUSES OF THE TENSION - NOTABLY THE QUESTION OF GREEK AND TURKISH FORCES STATIONED ON CYPRUS. THERE WOULD STILL REMAIN A LONG LIST OF POTENTIAL CAUSES OF FRICTION BETWEEN THE GREEK AND TURKISH COMMUNITIES ON THE ISLAND THAT WOULD REQUIRE LENGTHY AND PATIENT NEGOTIATION TO OVERCOME.
