Background: Prince Carlos of Bourbon, General franco's political heir, was guest of honour at a glittering ball at the Spanish Embassy in Washington on Wednesday night (January 27).

Prince Juan Carlos and his wife, Princess Sofia arrived in the United States last Monday. The visit is seen as a chance for the Prince to receive a thorough grounding on the present political situation in the United States before he takes over as head of state in Spain.

The guest list at the ball was headed by Mr. William Rogers, United States Secretary of State, and included Congressmen, Senators and leading businessmen.

Washington's society writers hailed the ball as a return to the "good old days" when the capital's night life was really something to write about.
