    Canada will lend the Ivory Coast more than 500,000 pounds sterling (1.2 million dollars) for the construction of a national library under an economic agreement signed in Abidjan on Tuesday (17 Nov).

    The agreement was signed by the Canadian Ambassador. Mr. Georges Charpentier, and Ivory Coast Finance Minister, M. Konan Bedie. The library will be built in Abidjan and Canada has also agreed to pay transportation and insurance costs on building materials.

    The Ivory Coast Government is to put about 400,000 sterling (960,000 dollars) towards the cost of the library.

    Speaking at the ceremony, the Canadian Ambassador said:
    Replying to the Canadian Ambassador, the Finance Minister, M. Bedie, said:
    The aim of the library is to greater together documents, books and periodicals from throughout the Ivory Coast and other countries. The library will become a focal point for research in Abidjan and be a major boost for cultural progress in West Africa.
