    TEN MEN AND THREE WOMEN FACING CHARGES IN CONNECTION WITH BRITAIN'S MAIL TRAIN ROBBERY APPEARED IN COURT AT AYLESBURY, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE TODAY (THURSDAY).EIGHT ARE ACCUSED OF BEING CONCERNED IN THE ROBBERY, AND FIVE OF RECEIVING.

    MORE THAN 150 WITNESSES ARE EXPECTED TO BE CALLED DURING THIS MAGISTRATE'S COURT HEARING.THE PROSECUTION ALLEGES THAT GBP2,631,784 STERLING IN OLD AND NEW BANKNOTES WAS TAKEN ON AUGUST 8, FROM A NIGHT MAIL TRAIN AT AN ISOLATED SPOT IN BUCKINGHAMSHIRE AFTER IT HAD BEEN STOPPED BY FAKED SIGNALS AND THE DRIVER ATTACKED.

    A CROWD OF PRESSMEN AND ONLOOKERS HAD GATHERED OUTSIDE THE AYLESBURY RURAL COUNCIL CHAMBER WHERE THE HEARING IS BEING HELD.THEY SAW A HEAVY POLICE GUARD BRING IN TEN OF THE ACCUSED.MANY HAD THEIR HEADS COVERED.THREE OF THE ACCUSED WERE GRANTED BAIL AT AN EARLIER HEARING.THEY ARRIVED WITH THEIR LAWYERS.THEY WERE ALFRED PILGRIM, AND HIS WIFE MARY FLORENCE PILGRIM, AND RENEE BOAL.THEY ARE ALL CHARGED WITH RECEIVING SOME OF THE STOLEN MONEY.

    AT THE HEARING MR.HOWARD SABIN, FOR THE PROSECUTION, IN HIS OPENING ADDRESS DESCRIBED THE HOLD-UP AS "A CRIME THAT STRIKES AT THE ROOTS OF CIVILISED SOCIETY.
