  • Description

Salvage claims worth eight million dollars (2.8 million pounds sterling) have been laid against the West German freighter Rumba, abandoned in the North atlantic Ocean last week.

The crew of eighteen abandoned the vessel 250 miles (400 kms) off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada when eight locomotives, valued at 500,000 dollars (180,000 pounds sterling) each, broke loose in its hold during a storm. The Rumba's Norwegian captain, Elias Vaahnes, said he feared the locomotives might crash through the vessel's hull.

Another eight locomotives were lashed on the deck of the Rumba.

The vessel was taken in two by the Dutch tug Smit-Lloyd, but during the 200 mile (320 kms) journey to St. Johns Harbour in Newfoundland, three of the locomotives on deck broke loose and plunged overboard.

SYNOPSIS: The West German freighter Rumbe was towed into St. Johns Harbour in the Canadian province of New found land on Monday. The vessel had been abandoned in the North Atlantic after eight large locomotives broke loose in its hold. The crew of eighteen was rescued by the dutch tug Smit-Lloyd and a Canadian forces helicopter. The Smit-Lloyd then took the badly listing vessel in tow.

During the two-hundred-mile two, three of the eight locomotives lashed on the deck of the Rumba, broke loose and plunged into the sea.

The Ruma's Norwegian captain said he feared the locomotives in the hold might have crashed through the vessel's hull, not giving his crew time to abandon ship. Salvage claims estimated at eight million dollars have been laid against the vessel.
