    MORE THAN 100 CARS DRIVEN BY THE WORLD'S TOP RALLY DRIVERS LEFT LONDON AIRPORT (SATURDAY) ON THE FIRST LEG OF THE 2,500 MILE BRITISH ROYAL AUTOMOBILE CLUB MOTOR RALLY. AT THE END OF THE OPENING STAGE - AT BRISTOL IN WESTERN ENGLAND -- THE LEADER WAS SWEDEN'S BJORN WALDAGARD IN GERMAN PORCHE WITH FINLAND'S MAKOLA SECOND IN AN ITALIAN LANCIA. THIRD WAS ANOTHER FINN, TIMO MAKINEN IN A FORD ESCORT.

    THE DRIVERS WERE FLAGGED OFF AT THE STARTING POINT BY THE BRITISH MINISTER OF TRANSPORT, MR RICHARD MARSH. THERE WERE MANY PRIVATE ENTRIES COMPETING AGAINST THE STRONG EUROPEAN WORKS TEAMS -- INCLUDING ITALIAN LANCIAS, SWEDISH SAABS, WEST GERMAN PORCHES AND EAST GERMAN WARTBURGS. BRITISH BMC AND FORD TEAMS WILL ALSO OFFER A STRONG CHALLENGE.

    THE RALLY IS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION AT LONDON AIRPORT NEXT WEDNESDAY (NOVEMBER 20).
