Background: The exchange of prisoners of war between Israel and Egypt was moving into its final stages on Tuesday (November 20th). The International Red Cross, which has been supervising the exchange, said the operation should be completed within two days.

So far, some 6072 of the 8,000 captured Egyptians have been repatriated, and 182 of the 247 Israelis held by Egypt have been sent home.

The Red Cross said two DC-8 airplanes would leave simultaneously on Thursday from Cairo and Tel Aviv carrying the last groups of prisoners in the two countries.

Among the Egyptians already evacuated were hundreds of wounded civilians from the city of Suez. The evacuees have been admitted to two Cairo hospitals, the Munira hospital and the Ahmed Maher Hospital.

But while the exchange of prisoners of war continued smoothly, Egyptian officials were apprehensive about Israel's sincerity in the search for peace. Israel had shown no signs of withdrawing to the October 22 ceasefire lines -- one of the six points in the ceasefire agreement -- and an informal meeting between Egyptian and Israeli military leaders had ended in disagreement on the ceasefire lines.
