  • Description

When a group of Russian submarines sailed into Alexandra soon after the creation of the United Arab Republic, the ripples of their bow waves sent political waves splashing along the shores of the low flash point eastern Mediterranean area.

One nation that viewed their arrival with alarm was Israel whose sunrise capture of an Egyptian destroyer during the Suez crisis had given the jewish Navy a moral-boosting lead over their Arab neighbours.

Without a submarine in their Navy, the Israel marine experts set out to balance maritime powers and entered into negotiations with the british Admiralty for seaworthy craft.

The transfer of two first-rate British craft was announced recently when the British Admiralty revealed the HMS Springer and HMS Sanguine would soon be flying the colours of the Israeli Navy.

While the Springer prepares to leave Portsmouth for her new base in Israel, Sanguine is filmed here by a Visnews cameraman in Malta harbour as she prepares to leave the depot ship, HMS Forth, for her final cruise under the white ensign.

A vessel of 1,000 tons with six torpedo tubes, Sanguine was completed toward the end of the war and has been with the Mediterranean fleet for several years. Her present British Commander is Lt. Commander Wooding.
