    NATSOF OF SONIC BOOM

TRANSCRIPT (SEQ 3): INTERVIEWER: "......WAS IT WORSE THAN BEFORE ?

STONEHOUSE: ITS THE FIRST TIME I'VE HEARD IT OUTSIDE. I'VE BEEN INDOORS THIS WEEK - THE FIRST TIME I DIDN'T HEAR IT ALL THOUGH I REALLY KNEW WHAT TIME IT WAS EXPECTED. THE SECOND TWO I DID HEAR. BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I'VE BEEN OUTSIDE & IT DIDN'T SOUND TOO BAD

INTERVIEWER: BUT DO YOU THINK YOU'VE ACHIEVED ANYTHING AT ALL ?

STONEHOUSE: I DO THINK WE'VE BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL INDEED. I'M DELIGHTED BY THE WAY THE PUBLIC HAVE REACTED AND COLLABORATED WITH US

INTERVIEWER: YOU DON'T THINK YOU'VE ANNOYED THE PUBLIC WITHOUT ACHIEVING ANYTHING

STONEHOUSE: NOT AT ALL....A VERY SMALL MINORITY OF THE PUBLIC WAS EXTREMELY ANNOYED

INTERVIEWER: WHAT WAS THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS...CAN YOU GIVE US AN IDEA OF HOW MANY?

STONEHOUSE: WE'VE HAD ...500 COMPLAINTS ALTOGETHER - WHEN I SAY COMPLAINTS, SOME OF THEM HAVE BEEN COMMENTS

INTERVIEWER (SEQ 4): MR. J.A. HAMILTON IS DIRECTOR GENERAL OF THE CONCORD PROJECT....HOW MUCH LOUDER ARE THE BANGS GOING TO BE THAN THE ONES LONDERER HAVE BEEN HEARING ?

HAMILTON: WE HAVEN'T ATTEMPTED IN THIS EXERCISE TO STIMULATE THE LOUD EFFECT YOU GET FROM THE MAXIMUM WAVE OF CONCORD. I THINK THAT THERE WILL BE SIMILAR EFFECT FROM THE CONCORD AT LOW WAVE...

INTERVIEWER: BUT THE PUBLIC HAVE GOT TO FACE THE FACT THAT CONCORD WITH 140 PASSENGERS PASSING OVER THEIR HEADS WILL MAKE MUCH LOUDER BANGS THAN LONDONERS HEARD ?

    HAMILTON: (REPLY INAUDIBLE)

INTERVIEWER (SEQ 5): WING COMMANDER ALLAN MERRIMAN IS THE MAN WHO HAS BEEN MAKING MOST OF THE ELEVEN BANGS OVER BRISTON & LONDON....HAVE YOU ENJOYED MAKING THEM ?

MERRIMAN: WE WERE APPROACHED BY HQ. AND THE MINISTRY OF TECHNOLOGY SOME MONTHS AGO, & ASKED IF WE WOULD PROVIDE THIS SERVICE TO THE MINISTRY & WE AGREED THAT WE COULD - THE ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE & WE'VE DONE EVERYTHING TO THEIR REQUIREMENTS

INTERVIEWER: WERE THEY THE LOUDEST BANGS YOU COULD MAKE ?

MERRIMAN: INDEED NOT. WE WERE ASKED AS PART OF THE SCIENTIFIC EXPERIMENT TO KEEP THE BANG AT A CERTAIN LEVEL & WE FLEW TO PRODUCE THAT LEVEL OF BANG.

INTERVIEWER: AND IF YOU'D FLOWN AT TWICE THE SPEED OF SOUND INSTEAD OF ONLY ONCE, WOULD THE BANG HAVE BEEN TWICE AS LOUD ?

MERRIMAN: ABSOLUTE SPEED IS NOT A STRONG CRITERION FOR THE SIZE OF THE BANG."
