  • Description

In Sierra Leone, Vice-President and Prime Minister Sorie Ibrahim Koroma joined the labour force himself to help set an example to people taking part in a self-help project, the building of a hospital at Makeni Town.

The Prime Minister was joined by other government ministers and senior civil servants when the foundations of the hospital were laid on Saturday (9 March). The hospital at Makeni Town near Port Loko is being built without any government financial aid, and is one of several self-help projects currently underway in Sierra Leone.

Finance comes from the people themselves and local businesses while the specialist tradesmen work for nothing. The bulk of the unskilled labour force is made up from local people. The hospital is being built in Prime Minister Koroma's constituency.

Mr. Koroma supervised the mixing of concrete for the hospital foundations and also helped in the lines of people passing concrete to tradesmen working in the trenches. The new hospital will replace the Port Loko Hospital Mr. Koroma has criticised for its poor medical facilities.
