In Fort Lamy, President Tombalbaye on Wednesday (29 Dec.) presented the ceremonial colours to the new Chief of Staff of the Chad Armed forces, Colonel Malloum. The appointment of the new Chief of Staff was announced on Monday, only two days after the President announced a reshuffle of ministers, giving six man different responsibilities within the Government.
SYNOPSIS: In Fort Lamy, President Tombalbaye paid his respect to the flag of Chad at the start of a colourful military ceremony in Independence Square.
For the armed forces of the Chad Republic it was an important day, the presentation of colours to their new Chief of Staff. His appointment had been announced two days earlier, following a shuffle of President Tombalbaye's Ministers.
First the President greeted the senior officers of the armed forces.
Then the new Chief of Staff, Colonel Malloum, stopped forward to receive the colours from the President. Officers and government ministers watched attentively as the ceremony unfolded.
General Cortadellas, the French Military delegate to Chad, also attended the ceremony. It was followed by a big parade and march past of the various branches of the armed forces.
Colonel Malloum stood in the place of honour, taking the salute for the first time as Chief of Staff. A military band played martial music as the troops, police and officer cadets saluted their new commander. And for the first time, the parade included a detachment of Chad airmen.
