  • Description

The Thai Government on Wednesday (16 February) ordered the expulsion of British-born journalist Norman Peagam, the Bangkok correspondent of the Hongkong-based Far Eastern Economic Review.

SYNOPSIS: An Expulsion order signed by the Interior Minister Samak Sundaravej said that an article by Mr Peagam about the possibility of a change of government and another military coup had "created misunderstanding" among the Thai people. It said the article in the February 11 issue was "intended to create a chaotic situation" and that Mr Peagam was considered to be a person "detrimental to national security".

The order banned Mr Peagam, aged 31, from entering Thailand in future. He was picked up by four Thai officials at his Bangkok office and taken to the Immigration Department, where his visa was endorsed.

Foreign correspondents based in Thailand have protested against the expulsion order and said Mr Peagam's article had reflected "fair comment by a correspondent carrying out his normal activities". Mr Peagam had been in the country for four years. He left on Wednesday (16 February) for Hongkong.
