  • Description

THE EIGHT ANNIVERSARY OF THE TURNING POINT FOR INDEPENDENCE WAS CELEBRATED BY THE MOROCCANS YESTERDAY (SUNDAY). KING HASSAN II TOOK THE SALUTE AT A TWO-HOUR MILITARY MARCH-PAST IN RABAT.

OTHER GOVERNMENT LEADERS AND DIPLOMATIC OFFICIALS WERE PRESENT. OBSERVERS NOTED THE STRIKINGLY MODERN EQUIPMENT WHICH HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE MOROCCAN ARMY.

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE THRONGED THE ROUTE TO CHEER THE PERSONNEL, FROM ALL THREE SERVICES. BUT THE LOUDEST CHEERS WERE FOR THOSE WHO TOOK PART IN THE BORDER CLASHES AGAINST THE ALGERIANS.

IT WAS ON NOVEMBER 16, 1955, THAT THE EXILED MOHAMMED BEN YOUSSEF, THE LATE FATHER OF KING HASSAN, RETURNED TO HIS COUNTRY TO BE REINSTATED AS SULTAN. FORMATION OF AN INTERNAL GOVERNMENT QUICKLY FOLLOWED, AND THE FOLLOWING MARCH FRANCE RECOGNISED MOROCCO'S INDEPENDENCE AND SOVEREIGNTY.

SINCE THEN, THE COUNTRY HAS PROGRESSED ORDERLY. TODAY KING HASSAN OPENED MOROCCO'S FIRST PARLIAMENT, TELLING ITS MEMBERS THAT HE WAS DELEGATING TO THEM SOME OF THE POWER HE AND HIS FOREBEARS HAVE HELD FOR MORE THAN 12 CENTURIES.

AND FROM ADDIS ABABA COMES NEWS OF PROGRESS BY THE 32-STATE AFRICAN UNITY ORGANISATION IN TRYING TO SETTLE THE BORDER DISPUTE WITH ALGERIA. A SEVEN-NATION COMMISSION WAS SET UP TO PROPOSE SOLUTIONS.
