  • Description

An American-bred filly, Trillion, brilliantly ridden by Lester Piggott, won the Prix Ganay, a major horse-racing event at the Longchamps course in Paris, on Sunday (30 April).

SYNOPSIS: The race was run during an electrical storm, with enough thunder and lightning to discourage any horse. But Piggott kept Trillion at the front throughout the race. The Prix Ganay, for four-year-old and upwards, is run over ten and a half furlongs (2100 metres). It is one of Europe's most important middle-distance races for older horses and worth 85-thousand U.S. dollars to the winner.

Monseigneur, also bred in the United States and ridden by Philippe Paquet, surged through in the home straight to eventually finish second. Sirlad, who was level with Trillion at the home turn, faded quickly and obviously disliked the soft going. As they crossed the line, Trillion was in front of Monseigneur by three lengths, then three-quarters of a length to Sirlad, third and a short head to Balermino, fourth.
