  • Description

Nearly 70 cars will leave Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday (5 May) at the start of the what has been called the toughest event in motoring history....the 1974 World Cup Rally. The 11-thousand mile (17,000 kms) rally will take drivers through 15 countries over some of the most hazardous terrain in the world, ending in Monich, West Germany, centre of the 1974 World Football Cup.

On Saturday (4 May) officials scrutineers were inspecting cars taking part in the rally to make sure they conformed to the rally rules. The cars will travel through England, France, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, Niger, Nigeria, Tunisia, Sicily, Italy, Turkey, Greece, Yugoslavia, Austria and Germany. The rally is scheduled to end at the Munich stadium on 25 May.

The ruggedness of the terrain is reflected in the rules of the race. Each car must carry a tank holding three gallons of water for each crew member, a full survival ration kit, distress flares and a magnetic compass.
