  • Description

The British and Israeli delegates walked out of the General Assembly at the United Nations on Wednesday (1 October) following a strong attack on both countries by Uganda's President Idi Amin.

Speaking in his capacity as chairman of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) President Amin was relatively restrained, but when he spoke as the President of Uganda he lashed out at Britain and accused it of blackmail over Northern Ireland. He then went on to call for the expulsion of Israel from the United Nations and the extinction of Israel as a state so that the territorial integrity of Palestine would be ensured and upheld.

Dressed in full uniform and decorated with numerous medals President Amin made his opening remarks in his native Ugandan language since he says he is a pure and proper son of Africa and does not believe in any colonial and imperialist language. The rest of his address, which lasted an hour, was read in English by Uganda's representative Mr. Khalid Younis Kinene.

President Amin also attacked other western nations including America for its subjugation of its negroes, then went on to congratulate black emerging nations who have gained independence in the last year.

He also proposed that each of the regional groupings in the U.N. should be given a bloc veto in the security council, a power at present confined to the five permanent council members, Britain, China, France, the United States and the Soviet Union.

U.N. Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim met uganda's President Amin when he arrived to speak at the General Assembly on Wednesday. His speech in English was read out by Ugandan delegate Mr. Khalid Younis Kinene.
