About 30 people were held hostage for several hours on Wednesday (18 April) by two gunmen when their attempt to rob a bank in the New York district of Harlem was foiled by a teller, who set off a silent alarm which alerted the police.

Armed police surrounded the Fifth Avenue branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank while the robbery was in progress. A gunbattle erupted and one of the would-be robbers, Mace Brown -- described as on the FBI's "10 most wanted" list -- was killed. A porter was wounded in the shooting.

The two surviving gunmen, identified as Kenneth Kelly, aged 26, and Herman Holiday, aged 33, sought refuge in the bank and held customers and bank staff hostage. Police in bullet-proof vests, armed with shotguns, surrounded the building and a helicopter hovered overhead.

After several hours of negotiations, using loudhailers, the two gunmen were persuaded that they wold not be shot if they surrendered and were ???corted from the bank with their hands over their heads.

SYNOPSIS: Police laid siege to a New York bank on Wednesday when a robbery being staged by three gunmen went wrong. A teller raised the alarm and the bank was quickly surrounded. A gunbattle ???upted and one of the robbers -- one the FBI's list of ten most wanted men -- was killed. A porter caught in the crossfire was wounded.

The two surviving gunmen took refuge in the bank, holding about 30 people hostage. Fearing a fat??? similar to that of their dead partner, they negotiated their surrender through a loud hailer, promising not to harm the hostages.

The gunmen released some of the hostages, who included women and children, as a force of about 100 policemen strengthened their cordon around the bank.

During the bargaining, the two gunmen -- named as H???rman Holiday, aged 33, and Kenneth Kelly, aged 26 -- admitted a television newsman and a policeman to the bank. After several hours of negotiations, the gunmen decided it was safe to give themselves up. Police warned onlookers to keep back as the m???n surrendered.

One hostage said later that the gunmen had treated them very well. Both men were charged with robbery and attempted murder.
