  • Description

The leader of Bangladesh's opposition National Awami Party(NAP), Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, on Tuesday (22 May broke an eight-day hunger strike after other opposition leaders pledged acts of civil disobedience if his political demands were not met by the Government.

The 90-year-old Maulana was taken to hospital on Monday (21 May) following concern by Government and opposition leaders over his deteriorating health. Earlier, President Abu Sayead Choudhury had pleaded with him to end his "fast unto death". The Maulana is demanding measures against rising prices - including putting a stop to smuggling and end to what he considers is political repression, and the safeguarding of individual rights and property.

On Tuesday, before breaking his fast with lemon juice, the Maulana fainted twice and doctors said his condition was alarming. The Maulana recovered sufficiently in hospital the same day to declare that he would launch a people's revolution to "overthrow the fascist rulers" on 3 June in Chittagong through the Gherao civil disobedience movement.
