    AT LEAST SEVEN PEOPLE HAVE DIED AND 110,000 HAVE BEEN MADE HOMELESS BY FLOODS WHICH DEVASTATED SOUTHERN AND EASTERN ALGERIA AFTER MORE THAN A WEEK OF TORRENTIAL RAINS AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER. THERE HAVE BEEN SIMILAR REPORTS OF DISASTROUS FLOODING ACROSS THE BORDER IN TUNISIA.

    THE FINAL FIGURES FOR ALGERIA MAY BE TWICE AS HIGH, ACCORDING TO DR MOULOUD BELHOUANE, PRESIDENT OF THE ALGERIAN RED CRESCENT, WHOSE ORGANISATION HAS BEEN STRUGGLING HARD TO GET EMERGENCY SUPPLIES TO THE AFFECTED AREAS.

    ROADS AND RAILWAYS HAVE BEEN WASHED AWAY BY THE FLOODWATERS, AND THE ONLY WAY IN TO WHOLE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IS BY AIR.

    THE RED CRESCENT HAS APPEALED FOR AID, AND THE UNITED STATES AND SEVERAL EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ARE REPORTED TO BE SENDING IN RELIEF SUPPLIES.

    SOME 30,000 HOMES ARE REPORTED DESTROYED ALONG WITH A NUMBER OF SCHOOLS, AND MANY CHILDREN ARE AMONG THE MISSING. LOSSES HAVE BEEN HEAVIEST AMONG THE NOMADIC TRIBES IN THE STRICKEN AREA.

    HUNDREDS OF ACRES (HECTARES) OF CULTIVATED LAND HAVE BEEN DESTROYED, AND IN THE BISKRA AND TOUGGOURT REGIONS THE DATE CROP IS REPORTED A TOTAL LOSS.

    (IN TUNISIA, MORE THAN THREE-HUNDRED DIED AND 73,000 WERE MADE HOMELESS BY FLOODS WHICH FOLLOWED THREE DAYS OF HEAVY RAIN LAST WEEKEND (28-30 SEPTEMBER).
