  • Description

A group of 71 Vietnamese refugees, resound by a Taiwanese naval ship, arrived in the Penghu Islands on Monday (10 Sept) for temporary stay in the camp.

Among the 71 boat people were three pregnant women and 19 children.

??? of the refugees said they fled from Vinh Tau is South Vietnam on August 1st on board a 12-metre-long finishing boat.

One week later the 30-horse-power motorised boat developed engine trouble and was adrift in South China Sea.

The navy command in Taipei monitored distress signals from the Viet Vietnamese boat for help, and sent the naval ship to rescue the refugees for temporary resettlement in Taiwan's offshore island, the official said.

The refugees will be settled at the Penghu reception centre for a while before they go to the U.S.

They were the 21st group of boat people, according to official statistics, and Taiwan has rescued 11,160 Indochinese refugees between 1975 and 1979.
