  • Description

NEW TRADING RESTRICTIONS IMPOSED BY THE KENYAN GOVERNMENT THIS WEEK COULD PROVOKE A FURTHER RUSH OF BRITISH ASIANS TO THE UNITED KINGDOM, SIMILAR TO THE ONE THAT TOOK PLACE EARLY LAST YEAR. THE KENYAN MINISTER FOR COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY, MWAI KIBAKI, SAID THE KENYAN ASIANS HAD BEEN TOLD TO WINS UP THEIR BUSINESSES. LAST YEAR'S "KENYANISATION" PROGRAMME IN KENYA AROUSED A STORM OF CONTROVERSY THERE AND IN THE UNITED KINGDOM, WHERE SPECIAL GOVERNMENT MEASURES WERE BROUGHT IN TO RESTRICT THE FLOW OF ASIAN IMMIGRANTS WHO HAD BEEN FORCED TO LEAVE KENYA.

MR. KIBAKI SAID ASIAN TRADERS IN NAIROBI HAD BEEN REFUSED LICENSES TO TRADE, AND ESTIMATED THAT WITHIN SIX MONTHS ABOUT 3,000 TRADERS WILL HAVE BEEN REFUSED LICENSES TO CARRY ON WITH THEIR BUSINESSES.

THE PRESIDENT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF BRITISH CITIZENS IN KENYA, DR. G.S. SANDHU, FLEW TO LONDON YESTERDAY IMMEDIATELY AFTER HEARING THE NEWS. HE WILL LOBBY PRIME MINISTERS ATTENDING THE COMMONWEALTH PRIME MINISTERS CONFERENCE NEXT WEEK, AND IS SEEKING AN EARLY MEETING WITH MR. CALLAGHAN, THE BRITISH HOME SECRETARY.

MR. CALLAGHAN WAS AT THE CENTRE OF THE STORM LAST MARCH WHEN THE HOUSES OF COMMONS PUSHED THROUGH ITS BILL RESTRICTIONS ENTRY OF ASIANS HOLDING BRITISH PASSPORTS INTO THE COUNTRY. HE WAS INTERVIEWED AT THE TIME:
THE LONDON "TIMES" SAID IN AN EDITORIAL TODAY (THURSDAY) THAT UGANDA MAY ALSO BEGIN TO PUT PRESSURE ON ASIANS TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY. THE "TIMES" SAID: "IT MUST BE EXPECTED THAT, OVER SOME YEARS, A LARGE NUMBER OF ASIANS OF BRITISH NATIONALITY WILL BE SQUEEZED OUT OF EAST AFRICA FOR REASONS NOT WHOLLY DISCREDITABLE TO THE AFRICAN GOVERNMENTS."
ENTEBBE AIRPORT, IN UGANDA, WAS USED MANY KENYAN ASIANS LAST YEAR AS AN ALTERNATIVE MEANS OF ENTERING THE UNITED KINGDOM. MANY OTHERS TRAVELLED BY SHIP TO INDIA, WHERE THEY ALSO HAD DIFFICULTIES IN ENTERING.

SEVERAL IMMIGRANT ORGANISATIONS IN BRITAIN HAVE TAKEN THE MATTER UP AND WILL BE PETITIONING BRITISH CABINET MINISTERS AND PRIME MINISTERS AT NEXT WEEK'S CONFERENCE.
