    Background: IRAN

Iraqi prisoners held captive in Iran have been permitted to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Iraqi army (6 January). They were allowed to attend a religious service held inside a makeshift mosque in the camp where they are detained, and they were addressed by their own comrades. The Iraqi soldiers were captured during the 16 month-old war, which has been largely confined to a strip of territory just inside the Iranian border with Iraq. Teheran radio has reported capturing several hundred enemy soldiers during the latest stage of the fighting, following an Iranian counter-offensive in the central mountainous zone of Gilan-e-Gharb. The Iranians claim to have killed nearly 400 Iraqis in fighting during recent days.
