  • Description

Irbid City in northern Jordan was one of the main targets for Israeli artillery on Wednesday (June 3). The shelling of the City, together with the Katyusha bases, was the latest in a series of retaliatory exchanges between the two sides which marked the third anniversary of the June 1968 war.

The Israeli action followed two separate actions from the north Jordan area earlier that day. Two barrages of guerrilla Katyusha rockets hit the biblical town of Beisan early on Wednesday Morning, hitting two schools, killing two people and wounding 18 others. Eight hours later shells fired by long-range Jordanian heavy artillery landed in the resort town of Tiberias on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, killing two more people and injuring ten others.

The Israelis then launched a combined air and artillery barrage on positions in Jordan opposite Beisan intermittently for eight hours during the day.

Israeli Military Observers said that the increased Arab guerrilla activity from Jordan was probably the result of a movement of guerrilla forces from Lebanon to Jordan following Israeli patrols on both sides of the border with Lebanon.
