    ONE OF THE NUNS SAID SHE HAD BEEN HELD AS A HOSTAGE BY THE REBELS, WHO DEMANDED MONEY AND CLOTHING FOR HER RELEASE. THE NUNS SAID THE HOSPITALS WHERE THEY WORKED WERE WITHOUT NURSES. BABIES WERE DYING THERE, THEY SAID, THROUGH LACK OF MEDICAL ATTENTION.

    MEANWHILE, IN KWILU PROVINCE, SCENE OF THE RECENT DISORDERS, U.N. HELICOPTERS HAVE BEEN FLYING IN TO RESCUE STRANDED MISSIONARIES. THE MISSIONS HAVE BEEN MAIN TARGET OF ARMED BANDS OF GUERRILLAS.
