SYNOPSIS: The Shah of Iran and Jordan's King Hussein stopped off at a naval base near Jacksonville to watch the latest air combat fighters in action. The Shah and picked out the planes he wanted to see, and the US Government put them together in a dazzling air show.
The stars of the air show were 2 brand new fighters which have been competing with each other for US military contracts - General Dynamic's single-engined F-16 was selected a few months ago by the Air Force - the Air Force currently plans to buy at least 650 F-16s.
The Navy on the other hand announced last Friday that it has selected the Northrop Corporation's twin-engined F-17.
Hussein and the Shah appeared to be interested in both the planes -if they were to place an order today it would be close to 5 years before they could expect delivery on either the F-16 or 17.
Jordan and Iran could expect to pay more than 4 or 5 million dollars per plane. The question that remains to be answered in what effect would a large number of these fighter/bombers have on the military balance in the Middle East?
