  • Description

YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) WAS THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE WARSAW PACT INTERVENTION OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA AND, IN COMMEMORATION OF THE EVENT, THOUSANDS OF CZECHS TOOK TO THE STREETS OF PRAGUE CHANTING SLOGANS SUCH AS "LONG LIVE DUBCEK - RUSSIANS OUT" AND SINGING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. AFTER A COMPLETE TRAFFIC STOPPAGE DURING WHICH ALL MOTOR VEHICLES SOUNDED A LOUD CACOPHANY OF PROTEST ON THEIR HORNS, MANY OF THE DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED ROUND THE GRAVE OF JAN PALACH, TO LAY FLOWERS AND LIGHT CANDLES IN HOMAGE OF THE YOUNG STUDENTS WHO IMMOLATED HIMSELF DURING LAST YEAR'S EVENTS.

THE TRAFFIC STOPPAGE LASTED FOR FIVE MINUTES, WHILE PEDESTRIANS STOPPED AND CLAPPED LOUDLY ON THE PAVEMENTS -- KEEPING TIME TO THE HONKING OF THE CAR HORNS. AN ARMY HELICOPTER CIRCLED OVERHEAD AT ROOFTOP LEVEL DURING THE TRAFFIC DEMONSTRATION. EARLIER, TENS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAD IGNORED PUBLIC TRANSPORT TO WALK TO WORK IN SIGN IN PROTEST AGAINST THE EVENTS OF AUGUST 1968 AND THE CONTINUED SOVIET CONTROL. THERE WAS ALSO A TACIT UNDERSTANDING NOT TO GO SHOPPING DURING THE DAY EXCEPT FOR ESSENTIALS.

YESTERDAY'S NOISY, BUT RELATIVELY PEACEFUL, DEMONSTRATION FOLLOWED NEARLY 48 HOURS OF MORE VIOLENT ACTIVITY DURING WHICH TWO PEOPLE WERE KILLED. AS THE DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED IN WENCESLAS SQUARE AND THE SIDE STREETS, TROOP CARRIERS AND POLICE WATER CANNONS TOOK UP POSITIONS NEARBY READY TO DISPERSE THE CROWDS -- BUT MEN WERE NOT REQUIRED AT THAT TIME.

LATER THAT NIGHT, TANKS RUMBLED INTO THE HEART OF THE CITY AND SMASHED THROUGH THE BARRICADES WHICH HAD BEEN SET UP BY THE DEMONSTRATORS. AND, AS TROOPS AND TANKS GATHERED ROUND CZECH COMMUNIST PARTY HEADQUARTERS EARLY THIS MORNING (FRIDAY), THE COUNTRY'S LEADERS HELD URGENT TALKS INSIDE.

FIVE PEOPLE HAVE SO FAR BEEN REPORTED KILLED IN THE THREE DAYS OF DEMONSTRATIONS AND 600 ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE.
