Background: A new life-saving device has been developed in Switzerland which should give new standards of security and comfort to all those who swim in, or travel on, water, and save at least some of the thousands who are drowning every year.

The new device can be part of the swimming costume, although it is removable. The costume rapidly turns into a life jacket when a belt is inflated by the small carton of compressed gas it contains.

The belt and gas container are no bigger than a packet of cigarettes, and can be available in all circumstances, according to the developers.

They claim that the invention does not impair the appearance of the swimming costume and for "a modest sum" allows people to enjoy all aquatic pleasures in complete security.

The belt is contained in a pocket in the top of the swimming costume and its materials are resistant to such hazards as salt water, oil and the heat of the sun.
