  • Description

Archbishop Makarios and former EOKA leader, General Grivas, at their second five-hour meeting at Rhodes, Greece, Oct.8, discussed British bases and Cyprus constitutional difficulties. The meeting was mainly taken up with a report on these questions by Archbishop Makarios.

The Rhodes talks form the first meeting of the two Cyprus leaders since Grivas was ordered to leave the island following implementation of the London and Zurich agreements.

Answering questions afterwards, the Archbishop said he knew of no provision under the London Agreement by which Britain had a right to impose a unilateral solution on the question of sovereign bases in the new Cyprus Republic.

General Grivas, who emerged from the talks smiling, told reporters he was "fully satisfied" with the Archbishop's report.

General agreement between the two leaders, following recent bitter exchanges, is interpreted as a "solid indication that the talks are heading towards a successful understanding between the two men".

The talks, expected to end Oct. 9, were resumed later Oct. 8, after the two leaders had visited Philerimos monastery near Rhodes.
