Background: Featherstone Rovers beat Bradford Northern in the Rugby League Cup Final at London's Wembley Stadium on Saturday (12 May). They won by 33 points to 14 to make it the highest-scoring final in 43 years.
The dry sunny weather encouraged open running and passing manoeuvres, and the game was fast with very few scrummages.
Featherstone Rovers, playing from left to right, showed superior team work and understanding to run up 17 points in the first 20 minutes. Although Bradford fought back with spirit in the second half, Featherstone settled the match by scoring three times in the last ten minutes.
SYNOPSIS: Featherstone, in the dark strip, scored a penalty and Newlove crossed for a try. Their place-kicker Kellett was also on target, and they soon scored 7 points.
The Bradford captain Tees steadied his side with a penalty, but after only 20 minutes the score was 17-2.
With the aid of another penalty, Bradford managed to run out at halftime with six points to Featherstone's 17.
There seemed a brief chance of revival for Braford, playing from left to right in the second hair, where their wing three-quarter Redfearn crossed for a try. But Tees was off target.
Featherstone soon dispelled fears that their stamina might have been sapped by the speed of the play by scoring again. Bradford's chances of a recovery had by now virtually disappeared.
