  • Description

THE BRITISH TRADE UNION CONGRESS HAS DECIDED TO INTERVENE IN THE PORT TALBOT STEEL DISPUTE. IT DID SO FOLLOWING A REQUEST FROM THE STEEL WORKERS' LEADER, MR. HARRY DOUGLAS, WHO STATED A SOLUTION MUST BE FOUND AND QUICKLY. OTHERWISE, HE SAID, THE ECONOMY OF WEST WALES COULD WEAKENED FOR A DECADE.

THE 14-DAY-OLD DISPUTE HAS SHUT DOWN THE STEELWORKS AND THROWN IDLE MORE THAN 17,000 WORKERS. IT STARTED WHEN 3,500 KEY WORKERS TOOK AN UNOFFICIAL WEEK'S HOLIDAY OVER CHRISTMAS.

NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN MANAGEMENT AND UNION LEADERS HAVE DEADLOCKED. THEY HAVE REVOLVED AROUND ADDITIONAL HOLIDAY BENEFITS SOUGHT BY SEVEN CRAFT UNIONS, WHILE THE AMALGAMATED ENGINEERING UNION WANTS PAY RISES UP TO GBP8 PER WEEK FOR ITS MEMBERS.

THE VAST PLANT, THE LARGEST STEELWORKS AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT IN BRITAIN, IS DESERTED EXCEPT FOR MAINTENANCE STAFF. PRESSED STEEL FOR THE MOTOR CAR INDUSTRY IS ONE OF ITS MAIN MANUFACTURES AND ALREADY SOME BRITISH CAR FACTORIES ARE PLACING THEIR ORDERS ELSEWHERE, MOSTLY IN EUROPE.

THE INTERVENTION BY THE T.U.C., ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY, IS CONSIDERED A BIG STEP FORWARD IN MOVES TOWARDS REOPENING THE INDUSTRY.
