Background: Lastweek in Jube, The People's Regional Assembly Southern Region met under the chairmanship of their President Abel Alier (he is the President of South Sudan and second Vice President of the Sudan). After the opening,a new speaker's elections were held and the Minister for Finance Hilary Paul Logali was elected unopposed as Speaker for the next term.

The South Sudan Parliament, which in Independent of the Government in Khartoum has 60 members including three women members.

The Southern Sudan provinces of Equatoria, Upper Nile and Bahr el Ghazal comprise an area of 250,000 square miles, approx one quarter of the land area of the Sudan. When the 17 year war between the Southern Anyanya and the central government was formally ended in 1972 with the Addis Ababa agreement the South Sudan was given semi-autonomy in accedence with the agreement --- the South now has its own President, their own Cabinet of regional Ministers and of course their own Parliament -- The People's Regional Assembly with elected members. All aspects of government in South Sudan are autonomous except for those affecting the country as a whole - defence, foreign affairs and overall economic planning.
