  • Description

Thirty South Korean civic leaders inaugurated a nationwide campaign appealing to President Park for a revision of the Constitution in Seoul on Monday (24th December).

Six members of the group met at the Seoul Young Mens' Christian Association (YMCA) building on Monday to announce the launching of a signature-collecting campaign asking President Park Chung-hee to liberalise the Constitution he set up October last year using martial law powers.

5,000 people have already privately signed the petition, and a spokesman for the group said that it would be presented to the President when the number of signatories had reached one million or more.

The group included former opposition leader Yu Chin-o, former Upper House Speaker George Paik, Catholic Cardinal Kim Sou-hwan, dissident poet Kim Chi-ha, and journalist Cheon Kuan-u.

Following three months of anti-government agitation by students and intellectuals, Premier Kim Johg-pil has recently said that the government will not tolerate any "anti-establishment" campaigns.
