Background: A proposed merger of the Howald Werft, government owned shipyard, with privately operated enterprises of various kinds, has brought on a 24 hour strike by the 9,000 workers from the shipyard, at Hamburg.

They fear that the reversion of the Howald Werft to private enterprise will endanger their the status and living standards. The Federal Government states that such a merger will benefit the workers by bringing them continuity of employment, and the amalgamated companies will themselves benefit from the integration.

On Tuesday morning, 20th. May, pickets were scattered around the shipyard checking union cards so that workers from other companies in the area and young apprentices could go unmolested to their work.

The IG-----the Metal Union---officials closed the token strike at 6 o'clock on Wednesday morning, satisfied that they had at the least expressed their opposition to any take-overs by private enterprise.
