Background: England won the fourth Test cricket match at Old Trafford, Manchester, U.K., July 28. India, all out for 376 in their second innings, were defeated by 171 runs.
Indian batsmen gave England some very anxious moments during one exciting phase of the game. Set to get 548 to win, their batsmen did remarkably well in scoring 376 before S.P.Gupte fell to Freddie Trueman's bowling to finish the Indian second innings.
Centuries by Baig and Illingsworth helped to make this India's most impressive performance of the Test series so far. The 22-year old Oxford Freshman A.A.Baig, who was playing in his first Test Match and who was forced to retie after being struck on the head by the ball, hit 112 before he was finally run out.
India's wickets then fell steadily until the final batsmen Desal and Gupte came together and held out for a time.
With their victory at Manchester, England have now won the first four Test Matches against India; the fifth Test takes place next month at the Oval, London.
