  • Description

After the death of President Francois "Papa Doc" Duvalier, many predicted that chaos and bloodshed would ensue as various factions vied for the control of Haiti--but yesterday (Saturday), Jean-Claude Duvalier presided over his father's funeral ceremony in a calm atmosphere, broken only by the occasional outburst of emotion from the mourners. Security precautions were minimal, and no incidents were reported as the body was taken from the National Palace to the Family Mausoleum at the foot of the Green Mountains.

Jean-Claude, at 19 the world's youngest Head of State, was reported to have stood silently in the intense heat throughout the three-hour funeral procession and ceremony. He was accompanied by his mother, Mme. Simone Duvalier, and by his sister, Mme. Marie-Denise Dominique--one of the people who had been earlier tipped as a possible contender for the succession to the late President.
