    THE AIRLINER, DUE TO MAKE ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT THIS AUTUMN TAXIED FOR 12 MINUTES ALONG A SPECIAL RUNWAY, COVERING ABOUT ONE AND A QUARTER MILES (TWO KMS) AT BETWEEN 15 AND 18 MILES AN HOUR (25-30 KPH).

    LAST SUNDAY (18 AUGUST), THE CONCORDE MADE A SURPRISE UNSCHEDULED GROUND TEST AT THE TOULOUSE-BLAGNAO AIRFIELD WHEN IT ROLLED 200 YARDS (METRES) UNDER THE POWER OF ITS FOUR MASSIVE ROLLS ROYCE OLYMPUS 593-B ENGINES.

    BUT SUD-AVIATION, THE MANUFACTURERS, SAID CHIEF TEST PILOT ANDRE TURCAT WAS ONLY TESTING THE BRAKES ON THAT OCCASION.

    TODAY THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN A SERIES OF ROLLING EXERCISES, INCLUDING TAXIING AND PRACTICE TURNS, ON THE 12,000 FEET (3,200 METRE) RUNWAY EQUIPPED WITH A GIANT CRASH BARRIED -- A NYLON NET -- AT ONE END. IN THE NAVIGATOR'S SEAT, ACTING AS AN OBSERVER, WAS BRITISH TEST PILOT BRIAN TRUBSHAW, WHO WILL LATER FLY THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION'S PROTOTYPE, CONCORDE 002.

    TESTS ARE EXPECTED TO LAST FOR ABOUT THREE DAYS AND TAKE THE CONCORDE UP TO ABOUT M.P.H. (200 KPH). IT WILL THEN RESUME WORKSHOP TESTS TO PREPARE FOR THE FIRST FLIGHT PROBABLY IN NOVEMBER.
