    MR. JOHN BEITH, THE ASSISTANT UNDER-SECRETARY AT THE BRITISH FOREIGN OFFICE, WAS IN MADRID FOR THE MEETING. HE LED A SMALL TEAM FROM THE BRITISH EMBASSY IN A MEETING WITH OFFICIALS AT THE SPANISH FOREIGN MINISTRY.

    OFFICIALS SAID THE TALKS WERE ADJOURNED UNTIL WEDNESDAY AFTER AN INFORMAL OPENING SESSION LASTING 90 MINUTES. SPAIN AND BRITAIN HAVE BEEN DEADLOCKED OVER GIBRALTAR SINCE OCTOBER 1966... THE UNITED NATIONS HAS RULED IN FAVOUR OF THE SPANISH CLAIM TO SOVEREIGNTY OVER THE ROCK, BUT BRITAIN RECOGNISES THE RESULT OF A REFERENDUM IN WHICH THE PEOPLE OF GIBRALTAR VOTED TO KEEP THEIR LINKS WITH BRITAIN.
